I’ve rewritten a lot of the combat code over the last couple of days, partially to lay the way for Survivors’ stuff and partially just because it was getting unmanageable.
The big upshots going forward are:
- Ease of adding Techniques that do neat stuff.
- More places to hook neat stuff (it’s way easier to have effects triggering on defenses now, for example).
- Speed and stability in the combat script (which honestly hasn’t been much of a problem).
So obviously most of the changes are “under the hood,” so to speak. But if you see anything weird, be sure to tell me. I’d expect it to be pretty obvious, like PHP errors whenever you use a certain Technique.
Changes that you may notice are listed below. I apologize in advance if I missed any. I cleaned up a lot of code while I was moving stuff around.
- There should be less variance in damage when you get battles between opponents with high power and high defense. Overall, this ends up being a defenses buff as well.
- Reactive Defense has gotten a separate boost that I’ve been meaning to give it for a while. I’m still a bit torn, so feel free to play around with it for a bit and give some feedback.
- Stunning attacks that logically need to do damage to have an effect (like Live Wire) now can be evaded. Thanks for the suggestion, Nyther.
- Running out of options no longer lets you escape inescapable fights, which is to say you now get beaten up rather than running. Thanks for pointing out the weirdness, Llamaman.
- To make the above less obnoxious, trying to flee will no longer clear your hand. Striking with an empty chain still will, though.
- Reactive Defense should apply to end of round damage (like Dynamite) consistently now.
- In the “very minor change” department, tweaked the way Brutality is gained. It should be easier to get some, but harder to get an overwhelming amount. We’ll see :)
Cheers!

I’ve mostly been unpacking and working on the Survivors’ Quest, but I’ve also snuck out a few changes. Nothing too major, but wanted to make sure they didn’t get lost down the memory hole.
- If you have a Christmas Tree up, your ornaments are visible from your profile. Thanks to Al for finally prodding me into implementing it.
- Rankings (Fishing, Chess) should now be reset properly by the beta reset. Good catch, Xerf!
- Maxwell’s rewards should be working properly. Thanks for the bug reports, Al and Argeth!
- Exclusive buffs like music and fishing lures should display a little more cleanly. Good call, GoldS.
- I added some more interactions with the Slags Medical Files. Thanks for the suggestions, Llamaman.
- As mentioned on the podcast, added two new avatars.
- And a big “thank you!” to Mag, Borkman, Vholes Piper, Nyther, Cryptodynamic, and Glass for reporting typos.
Cheers!

I just got back from my vacation in Florida (Clearwater, if you’re curious). Bug reports and the like should be caught up, so if you have any outstanding bugs, feel free to pester me again.
As it turns out, all the bugs I remember fixing over vacation are hacking/net combat related. Well that and a lot of typos :)
- Unplugging from a net combat should now replenish net stats properly. Thanks Nyther!
- Javascript should no longer go utterly berserk heading from a net combat to the meatspace kind (well… net-meatspace rather than net-net… yeah) while in Firefox. Thanks for the bug report, Cryptodynamic!
- Intercept Code and Extract Code should now play together properly rather than getting into a fight and breaking all their toys. Good catch, Mag!
- Also, thanks to Llamaman, Al, Xerf, Plus4, Mag, and Thrillhouse for reporting some typos and grammatical weirding.
Cheers!

The Midgard Laboratory in the Slags has had some security updates, centering around their shiny new computer system. Some encounters in the lab have been changed and there are ripples elsewhere.
There’s a lot of cool there I don’t want to spoil, but folks will note that the security on the locker room (such as it was) has changed. So you’re not just imagining things.
Other recent changes include:
- Intercept data now appropriately drops some code. Thanks for the suggestion, bonbon.
- Hawk’s request regarding his errant member in the Slags should now show up in your quest log. Thanks Steaming for getting me on this track.
- Also, we have a ton of typo fixes thanks to Mag, Hotpho, Sir Cheddar, Cristiona, Dennis, Vholes Piper, Factitious, Nyther, and Thrillhouse. Not kidding. There were a lot of typos.
P.S.: There will probably be a bit more Slags-quest related touching up as the Survivors’ Quest looms closer. Nothing huge, mostly just implementing suggestions I’ve let pile up.
Cheers!

I have some updates to report, but also a bit of forewarning:
There is some scheduled downtime on the server from 5-11pm server time on Friday. That translates into 11am to 5pm Central Time. Our hosts are moving some servers around in the data center, which potentially might take less time, but shouldn’t be more than six hours without catastrophe.
- Added a “Last Hacked” in the left hand pane when appropriate. Thanks for the suggestion, Al.
- Your current effects are now updated when you receive Fae Eyes or Ocean Eyes. Good catch, Soulmech.
- New contacts now result in the Contacts link up top being highlighted. Good suggestion, Al and Juntao.
- Corrected some errors with saving account preferences. Thanks, Morwen!
- Also fixed up a slew of typos from Nyther, Man Mobile, Wyrd, Caradal, and Mag. Thanks!
Cheers!

It occurs to me it’s been a bit since I posted the bug fixes. Here’s what we’ve got:
- Fixed a pair of bugs that were allowing descriptions to leak out early. Thanks Al and Cryptodynamic!
- In the process of fixing that, broke the description system in several novel ways (my favorite being that you couldn’t see your shirt’s description.) Thanks for the bug reports Cristiona, Edwahd, Nyther, Lord Finisher, Blarghgh, and PaidPiedPiperPal.
- Added some spaces where they were desperately needed. Good call, Ricket.
- Resolved an issue where the Energy on certain special fights was being charged up front. Good eyes, Lord Finisher.
- Continuing the theme, broke noncombats while I was in there. Thanks for the bug report, vandamien.
- Corrected an issue where you could lock yourself out of Mikhail’s reward for the Docks quest if Lo leaves before you take it. Good catch, xKiv!
- Also fixed an issue where certain hacking sites were giving away Christmas presents. In October! I know, it’s crazy :) Thanks, slyspawn!
- Thanks to RazielSonofKain and especially Mag for hunting down some typos for me.
Status on what I’m working on is: done with the crafting stuff I was dragging on (about five dozen items, some new buffs/techniques, and a bunch of skills). Next is dialogue for that branch, followed by a break working on other stuff you’ll see sooner to clear my head.
Cheers!

A few updates, almost all hacking related. Because that is how I roll, apparently.
- One of the ways hacked sites leave the system wasn’t implemented. It should be working now.
- When fighting multiple defenders in hacking, one being destroyed should now show an appropriate void. Thanks to Starwed, Mag, and Nyther for the bug reports!
- Sands of Time got a buff so it can now defeat the Firewall tool. Thanks Rykar, for getting me on this train of thought.
- In a strangely non-hacking update, hopefully fixed a long standing issue where techniques that care what your opponent is doing didn’t care if your opponent was dead. If that didn’t make sense, just ignore it :) Thanks JTN2001!
- And thanks to Nyther, Thrillhouse, and particularly Mag for some typo fixes.
Cheers!

So, between my long weekend and the beginning of this week I fixed a ton of bugs and typos. I apologize in advance if I miss something in the list, but it’s the most thorough accounting I have.
- Fixed a bunch of early bugs within hacking. Thank you Rykar, Thrillhouse, Zelandoni, Nyther, Jick, Man Mobile, Blarghgh, and NX_Phoenix.
- Folks shouldn’t be getting blank spaces in hacking tools anymore. Thanks to Mag and Man Mobile for reporting this one.
- The special decompilers should work. Thank you RazielSonOfKain.
- You can no longer get stuck on the second floor of the Slags tower. Thanks for the bug report, Llamaman.
- Switching for a lower processor computer shouldn’t confuse the installation requirements screen anymore. Good catch, Harrakan!
- The A student no longer decides he needs more Eclipse every time you talk about art. Thanks llamaman!
- Made another stab at fixing Petrol Splash. Thanks Valera and JTN2002 for the testing!
- Added some new dialogue options for Lo. Good call Serenity.
- Dual Armored Vest is now function, thanks to RazielSonOfKain.
- Fixed the grammar for equipping and unequipping items that start with ‘the.’ Thanks Shademaster00 and Rykar.
- Added Data and Programs to the mall. Thanks Rykar!
- Thanks to Cryptodynamic for doublechecking I’m not giving you those trashy drone hounds when you’re supposed to get lean, mean twisted hounds :)
- Your X-Ray vision, although potent, no longer allows you to see Professor Evans through his door. Thanks Wyrd!
- As it turns out, vats of acid are not filled with little dolls and dried fish are not made out of tarnished coins. Who knew? Besides Shademaster00 and Cryptodynamic, that is?
- Also fixed a load of typos courtesy of Artie Effham, Edwahd, Sir Cheddar, Rykar, Thrillhouse, jetalynn, dfmchfhf, Mag, Zelandoni, Man Mobile, Jick, Wyrd, Borkman, and RazielSonOfKain. Thanks everyone!
Cheers!
